The Iceland squad arrived back to a rapturous reception from supporters in the capital of Reykjavik yesterday.
Thousands lined the streets to pay homage to the players and coaching staff, who saluted fans from an open top bus.
They exceeded many people’s expectations at Euro 2016, their first major tournament, by emerging from Group F in second place, ahead of favourites Portugal.
In the round of 16 they caused the biggest shock of the tournament when they knocked England out with a 2-1 win.
But their adventure ended at the quarter-final stage when they were beaten 5-2 by France on Sunday in Paris.
Not bad for a country with a population of only 330,000. It looks like a fair percentage of the population were in Reykjavik for the homecoming
The squad eventually made its way to a specially constructed stage in the city where their iconic ‘Viking clap’ was performed, by players and fans.
