Enda Kenny has said that consensus needs to be built to change the constitution around the 8th amendment.

Some have taken the Taoiseach’s comments to be the clearest indication yet that he believes a referendum on the issue will happen.

However, he has stood by the Attorney General’s opinion that a Bill to be voted on tomorrow that would allow terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities is unconstitutional.

Mr Kenny said that the proposals from Independent TD Mick Wallace would not solve the issue.

“The medical assessments of what is contained in Deputy Wallace’s Bill will not be touched by any medic in the country,” he said.

“This Bill is not good for women, it’s bad for women, it’s inadequate.”
