Another Irish naval vessel is on its way to the Mediterranean today.

The LÉ James Joyce will assist in the operation to rescue refugees and migrants attempting to cross into Europe.

It will take over from the LÉ Róisín, which has spent the past 10 weeks in the Mediterranean.

More than 8,500 people have been rescued by Irish naval vessels so far.
