The Dáil’s been told that the killing of five cattle by Defence Forces personnel in Co Monaghan was done humanely.
It has also heard that the killing was done for reasons of public safety, in what were described as “difficult circumstances”.
Junior Justice Minister David Stanton has been explaining some of the circumstances surrounding the case.
He insists the killing of the herd, which was under restrictions due to tuberculosis, was nothing to do with debt collectors.
“The Defence Forces carried out the humane cull of five animals on a farm in Co Monaghan due to a sufficient concern for public safety,” said Stanton.
“It is not correct, as has been alleged, that the cattle were treated inhumanely or that this case involves the operation of debt collectors.”
