Taoiseach Enda Kenny is today resisting calls to quit as Fine Gael leader this summer.

Mr Kenny has told an event in Castlebar that he will “not be diverted” from the work he was mandated to do as Taoiseach.

Earlier today, Kerry-based backbencher Brendan Griffin called for a new leader to be elected this summer, as otherwise the party may not be prepared for a general election.

However Mr Kenny dismissed the comments, saying that he remains committed to his work.

“So let me say: I have no intention of being diverted from that work, and my focus is entirely on the future,” he said.

“And for those who might be interested, I will not be diverted from that task, and that duty, and that responsibility, which is the mandate given to me by the people.”
