The Department of Health has begun a full external review of all so-called ‘Section 38’ agencies in the wake of issues at Console.

External consultants have been hired to review the governance structures of all the agencies receiving departmental funding.

The announcement was made in the Dáil by Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald.

She says the review will make sure that all bodies receiving State funding are properly run.

Ms Fitzgerald said: “The reviews involve an examination of key governance, processes and documents – including obtaining confirmation that internal financial controls and formal written financial procedures are in place in these organisations.

“Six of these reviews are currently underway.”
