The singles champions at the US Open will receive record prize money, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced.
The men’s and women’s singles champions will earn $3.5million (€3.15m), €0.7m more than Andy Murray and Serena Williams were awarded for winning this year’s Wimbledon.
A total prize fund of $46.3m (€41.7m) – €3.5m more than in 2015 – has been confirmed by USTA for the year’s final grand slam, which starts on August 29 at Flushing Meadows.
The runners-up in each singles tournament will receive $1.75m (€1.57m) while a first-round defeat will be worth $43,300 (€39,000). The winning team in the doubles competitions will share $625,000 (€564,000).
USTA president Katrina Adams told www.usopen.org: “We are proud that this year’s US Open will offer the richest purse in tennis history.
