Litter-lined streets show the aftermath of the Cahirmee Horse Fair in north Cork, in this video by Dan Linehan.

A drive through the town’s main street shows bags and other rubbish lifting in the breeze. The clean-up is underway in Buttevant this morning.

Cahirmee Horse Fair, which takes place on July 12 every year, is believed to date back to the time of Brian Boru, making it not only the oldest horse fair in Ireland but in all of Europe.

The fair moved from Cahirmee Fair Field to Buttevant in 1921 and has been held in Buttevant ever since.

The Duke of Wellington bought his horse, Copenhagen, which he rode at the Battle of Waterloo, at the fair.

Napoleon, his arch nemesis, also bought a horse at Cahirmee – the white charger Marengo, which the Emperor is shown riding in the artist Meissonier’s masterpiece The Retreat from Moscow.

Visitors to the fair can see the buying and selling of horses on the streets, while a horse show is also held with a number of prizes available.
