Housing and population changes are expected to dominate the publication of the preliminary results of Census 2016 this morning.

There is expected to be a particular focus on population growth figures from 2011 to 2016.

However, we will have to wait another year to hear about religion, education and household size.

Justin Gleeson, director of the All Island Research Observatory at Maynooth University, said that figures on housing vacancies will also be revealed.

“The figures that are available are really only broad headline figures, so all we’re going to hear about is population change, housing figures and housing vacancies – that’s it,” he said.

“The rest of the main results in terms of religion, household size, education, will all be coming out in the full Census returns, which will be almost a year from now, in the summer.”
