The Minister of State with Responsibility for Disabilities says he was appalled at what he saw on an RTÉ Investigates programme last night.

The programme revealed that a previously reported case, in which a young woman with intellectual disabilities was left in a care setting in Waterford, was not an isolated incident.

Last night’s programme highlighted another case of a vulnerable young woman who was returned to her family home, despite the HSE’s knowledge that she had been sexually abused as a child by a relative.

Minister Finian McGrath said that he will receive a report into the cases concerned by the end of this month.

Sinn Féin’s Disability Rights spokesperson, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin says he was deeply disturbed by what was reported.

“I know as a sibling of someone with an intellectual disability as many, many others in families right across this country, I am very, very annoyed by what I have witnessed,” he said.

“We can no longer tolerate failures, we can no longer tolerate a system that simply ignores the needs of the individual, their rights and entitlements.”
