A teenager has died in a crash in county Wicklow.

The 13-year-old was injured when the car he was a passenger in collided with a ditch.

The driver and the boy left the car and walked towards Roundwood from Annamoe before being offered a lift by a passerby.

Tragically, his condition deteriorated and he died en route to Loughlinstown Hospital. A post mortem is scheduled to take place this afternoon.

The male driver of the car, in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and brought to Wicklow Garda Station. He is scheduled to appear before Bray District Court this afternoon at 2pm.

The road between Roundwood and Annamoe is currently closed to allow a forensic examination of the scene take place.

Gardai wish to appeal to anyone who travelled this road prior to 6.40am this morning in either direction and who may have seen the collision or observed or passed the two males walking the road
