Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba faces up to eight months on the sidelines recuperating from a broken leg but still retains his competitive instinct.

The 31-year-old sustained the injury while playing for Shanghai Shenhua in a derby clash with Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League.

Ba was immediately taken to hospital and operated on to repair the damage.

According to medical staff when he woke from the anaesthetic his first words were: “Did we win the game?”

Ba will be pleased to hear that they won 2-1, but manager Gregorio Manzano said the victory was overshadowed by the awful injury.

“It could end his professional career,” Manzano said. “I would rather lose the game than lose Ba.”

Former clubs and teammates have wished the French striker all the best with his recovery.
