Sinn Féin spokesperson for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Imelda Munster, has today called for the regulation of city rickshaws.

The TD for Louth/Meath East and raised the point that there is no legislation or regulation of these vehicles, with rickshaw operators essentially being classed as cyclists – despite the fact that they carry passengers and work on a commercial basis.

As there is currently no legislation at all covering rickshaws, operators are not obliged to register them, and authorities do not know how many rickshaws are in operation, she said.

Munster raised concerns that rickshaws are being operated by unqualified persons, and that the vehicles are being operated in pedestrians areas.

“Rickshaws have been in Ireland for several years now, and it is high time that we have legislation in place to regulate them,” said Deputy Munster.

“This is important for the safety of rickshaw operators and the general public.

“We do not know if these vehicles are roadworthy. Both operators, passengers and other road-users require protection under law should traffic incidents occur involving rickshaws.

“I would like to see a situation where rickshaw operators are licensed, regulated and tax compliant. If the government is serious about road safety, this matter has to be addressed.

“It is imperative that this happens as a matter of urgency.

“This issue has been left on the long finger, and it’s high time it was addressed.”
