People who live on private estates but rent from their local Council may soon be able to buy their property as a discounted rate.

Later today Fianna Fáil will bring a bill before the Dáil which they say corrects an anomaly for Local Authority tenants.

The party has said that they want to level the playing field as those living on council estates already have the right to buy their rented property.

Fianna Fáil’s housing spokesperson Barry Cowen believes it is only fair council tenants on private estates have the same chance.

He is hopeful the Bill will become law in the near future.

“Opponents may say: ‘Oh, you shouldn’t be selling off Local Authority stock’, but the thing is, we should have an awful lot more stock,” he said.

“And the scheme is such that the money retained in each Local Authority stays in that Local Authority and helps to provide other services within the Housing Department of that Local Authority.”
