Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald hailed Galway’s performance in the six-point defeat of his side in the All-Ireland quarter-final at Semple Stadium.

“The energy and enthusiasm in Galway today was incredible. The passion they showed was first class and as a Clare man I’d like to say “well done” to them.

Perhaps hinting at the remarks made by former Clare manager Ger Loughnane about Galway in the run-up to the game, Fitzgerald paid particular tribute to Galway’s motivation levels.

“I believe they were the better team. It’s a long time since I saw Galway as fired up.”

“But I’m so proud of my guys. They fight unreal. Anyone who gives out about them is talking through their behind. It wasn’t our best day.”

Speaking to RTE’s Claire McNamara following the match, and referring to his own health scare this week that put his appearance at the fixture in jeopardy, Fitzgerald thanked well-wishers for their support and messages.

“It was a tough week. I’d like to thank everyone.”
