A SPOKESPERSON for An Post has confirmed to the New Ross Echo that work on renovating the post-office in New Ross will begin after the August Bank Holiday weekend.

“The project will take between two and three months and will involve the total renovation and enlargement of the public office space and a general revamp for the Charles Street premises,” said the spokesperson.

“The work will involve integrating the old public office with a portion of the premises formerly occupied by local postal staff,” he added.

The spokesperson also commented that An Post will try and ensure that as little disruption as possible will occur for customers availing of the services at the facility.

It’s expected the work will cost in the region of €500,000.

The news has been welcomed by the Cathaoirleach of New Ross Municipal District Council, Cllr. Michael Sheehan, who has long campaigned to have the facilities improved at the premises, and also Fine Gael TD, Min. Paul Kehoe.

“Post Offices are a vital business hub in the heart of local communities and this announcement by An Post represents an important investment in New Ross and the surrounding area,” said Min. Kehoe.

He also commented on the Post Office Network Business Development Group report which was published earlier this year highlighting 23 recommendations to provide a high quality postal service to customers.

“The Government is committed to acting on all of these recommendations to ensure a sustainable Post Office network into the future,” he said.

Cllr. Sheehan said the news is very welcome for New Ross and for the many people who avail of its services.

Highlighting that sometimes people have to stand in the rain due to the number of people availing of services and he said the renovations will very much welcomed by all users of the facility.
