The Health Watchdog is raising concerns about the first outbreak of a hospital-acquired disease at the National Liver Transplant Unit.

It follows an unannounced inspection of St Brigid’s Ward in St Vincent’s Hospital last March.

The hospital reported an incidence of VRE infection in 2014 and Hiqa said it is the first report of this type of antimicrobial resistance pattern in Ireland.

It said the poor infrastructure of the facility “does not facilitate effective infection prevention and control”.

Inspectors have identified high risks of the spread of infection at the facility.
