A 46-year-old Cork man dropped his pants and exposed his buttocks to gardaí in full view of a group of Spanish students in Cork city centre, writes Liam Heylin.

Judge Leo Malone said yesterday such behaviour was unacceptable and he jailed the culprit for three months.

Mark Turner who lives with the Simon Community in Cork had 99 previous convictions.

Inspector Fergal Foley said yesterday the 100th conviction was for engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour on July 7 at Daunt Square, Cork.

The inspector said the incident occurred around 9.30pm. He said Garda Claire Sheehan and her colleagues were on duty in the area when they saw Turner.

“He pulled down his trousers and exposed his buttocks to gardaí. A large group of Spanish students was present at the time,” said Insp Foley.

Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said he went through the prosecution statements with Turner and he just about remembered the exposure.

Judge Malone said it was not acceptable to behave like that, particularly when there was a group of young people from Spain present to witness it.

He imposed a three-month jail sentence on the accused.

Turner, meanwhile, pleaded guilty to a second offence of obstructing pedestrians by begging at Paul St on July 16 and being drunk and a danger.

Insp Foley said Turner was drinking from an open bottle of vodka at the time.

The judge imposed a concurrent one-month sentence for begging and fined Turner €250 for being drunk and a danger.
