Tipperary’s sole football All Star believes he will be joined in the pantheon by at least two countymen at the end of this season.

Speaking on the Irish Examiner GAA podcast, ex-Tipp forward Declan Browne accepts individual recognition will likely hinge on displays in an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Mayo or Tyrone, but he advanced the claims of several Tipp players.

“Probably 10 or 12 All Stars will be picked based on the semi-final. If we don’t show up and man up in the semi-final we’ll get nominations but we mightn’t get any All Stars.

“But Peter Acheson was immense against Galway and has probably been the standout midfielder. Maybe Clare’s Gary Brennan was up to Sunday but he might lose out now.

“Bill Maher will be in with a shout. And up front, Michael Quinlivan and Conor Sweeney. I’d be surprised if Tipp didn’t get at least two All Stars.

“I think Peter Acheson is number one and it could be a toss-up between Quinlivan and Sweeney because you still have Bernard Brogan, Paul Geaney, James O’Donoghue, Michael Murphy, all these guys. But if we perform on the big stage the next day, we’re in with a shout for three or four.”

But Browne warns that Tipperary mustn’t get distracted by the hype machine that will crank up between now and the semi-final.

“It’s uncharted territory for Tipp. But after doing so well, it would be a fright to take the eyes off the ball on the biggest stage of all. They are young guys, but they have the experience of being here before. All-Ireland minor semi-final, All-Ireland U21 semi-final.

“We’ve waited too long for this. We’ve soldiered down through the years for opportunities like this. To throw it away just because of it becoming a circus would be detrimental for the overall state of football, after making so much progress.

“But I think Liam Kearns really will keep them grounded. He has to because we might never get back to this situation again, so we must grasp it while it’s there.”
