The Russian Weightlifting Federation has appealed its blanket ban from the Rio Olympics to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Having already had two quota places removed for previous doping violations, the International Weightlifting Federation announced last week that the eight remaining Russians would not be allowed to compete at Rio 2016 following the reanalysis of samples from the last two Summer Olympics.

The IWF said on Friday that “the integrity of the weightlifting sport has been seriously damaged on multiple times and levels by the Russians”, although Russia’s sports minister Vitaly Mutko vowed there would be an appeal.

A Russian Olympic Committee spokesman confirmed to Press Association Sport that the appeal would be heard on Tuesday.

After all individual sports federations were told by the International Olympic Committee to make a decision on whether to include Russian competitors in the Games, only the IWF and athletics’ governing body, the IAAF, have issued blanket bans.

However, Florida-based long jumper Darya Klishina will participate after agreeing to compete under a neutral flag.
