A replica of Repeal the 8th mural, which was painted over in Temple Bar last week, will appear in Blackhall Place this morning.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is installing replicas of the mural at its Dublin premises, after the original was removed from the walls of the Project Arts Centre last week.

The Maser street art was removed over planning regulations, as well as complaints by pro-life groups.

Executive Director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties Mark Kelly has said the mural’s red heart on a blue background has now become an iconic image for the pro-choice movement.

“I think what the artist was doing was reaching out to people with a very approachable image and actually you can see in the meantime it has caught on,” said Kelly.

“This art is now appearing on t-shirts, caps, donuts and all over the place. People have seized on it as being emblematic of a fresh approach to the question.”
