Dublin is now more expensive than Paris to rent a room on Airbnb.

Dublin was 23rd for the most expensive cities in the world to rent a room for two, according to the Bloomberg World Airbnb Cost Index.

There are currently more than 2,000 homes in Dublin advertised on the site.

Chairman of Temple Bar Residents Association Frank McDonald said Airbnb needed to be carefully regulated, especially given Dublin’s accommodation shortage.

“The real problem is where an apartment or house is being let ‘for holiday use’, but (actually) for most of the year,” he said.

“In Berlin they aim to get back 12,000 residential units into the housing market as a result of the action they’re taking there.”

Berlin residents who blame the city’s rising rental prices on Airbnb’s growth have launched a #BoycottAirbnb campaign that includes billboards around the city. Other residents claim the money people can earn through Airbnb helps offset the costs of rising rents.

Frank McDonald added that actions were also being taken in Paris and San Franciso and other cities “where it’s recognised this is a real problem”.
