Blustery conditions impacted the second day of the Rio 2016 Olympics, leading to delays, cancellations and disruption.

Organising the first-ever Games on South American soil has been fraught with problems, with concerns over the Zika virus and water pollution having dominated the build-up.

However, wind was the unforeseen problem on Sunday as venues across Rio were battered.

The second day of the rowing regatta was called off as the Albano buoy system that marks the Lagoa course was blown off track, with increasing winds leading the day’s racing to be abandoned.

Gusts of up to 15 metres per second battered the course shortly after the postponement, leading to rejigged schedules for Monday and Tuesday.

High winds forced a delay to competition in the canoe slalom, with racing at Whitewater Stadium put back due to the weather conditions.

Part of the Olympic Aquatics Centre exterior was damaged – albeit a Rio 2016 Organizing Committee spokesperson insisted not structurally – while tents, signs, fences and tables were blown over at the Olympic Park.

The megastore there was reportedly shut, while chairs and other items were sent flying at the Olympic Village.

At the tennis there was initially only play on the centre court and a near two-hour delay on most other courts as banners and the like blew around, while barriers were blown over prior to the start of the women’s road race in Rio.
