Emiliano Grillo can breathe a sigh of relief after he feared he would miss out on the Olympic Games because an airline had lost his golf clubs.

The Argentinian golfer is due to tee off in Rio on Thursday morning, but his preparations were hugely disrupted when American Airlines mislaid his clubs en route to Brazil.

Grillo, ranked 39th in the world, tweeted in desperation on Monday evening: “@AmericanAir delays, rerouting and 20+ calls can’t find my golf bag. I am going to miss my chance to compete in the Olympics. @Rio2016”

He continued to document the frantic hunt for his clubs on social media as he feared missing out on golf’s return to the Olympics.

“@AmericanAir seriously, find me a human in JFK, MIA, or Sao Paolo that can physically look for my bag and confirm where it is and send it” he wrote.

He even asked his followers to vote in a poll, asking if they thought his clubs were in New York, Rio, Hong Kong or Ushuaia (Ibiza).

But there was a happy ending on Tuesday morning as Grillo tweeted a picture of himself hugging his recovered bag.

“I am never letting you go again… Until next flight…” he wrote.
