Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan suffered what looked like an agonising elbow injury during the men’s 77kg competition at the Rio Olympics last night.

The strongman, who was one of the competition favourites, was attempting to to lift 195kg in the clean and jerk movement when his elbow appeared to give way.

The 20-year-old screamed in agony and dropped the weight. He was then helped from the stage by visibly upset team-mates and coaches.

Karapetyan was brought to hospital, with reports suggesting he had dislocated his elbow in the incident.
