Just when we thought we couldn’t love them more, the Fijian government have announced a public holiday to celebrate the nation’s first Olympic medal.

The men’s sevens team claimed gold in some style, thrashing Great Britain in the final on a score line of 43-7, writes Gavin Spillane.

Renowned for their flair on the sevens circuit, Fiji’s heroics have been met with an eruption of celebrations around the Pacific island, phone networks have been offering free phone calls and Fiji Airways have announced the only beer they are serving today is Fiji Gold, a local beverage.

And now the government have declared the 22nd of August as a public holiday following the first medal in 16 Olympic Games.
