Mark English has finished fifth in his men’s 800m semi-final at the Rio Olympics, meaning the Donegal athlete has been eliminated, writes Will Downing.
Reigning Olympic champion and world record holder David Rudisha took the win in 1:43.88, ahead of American Clayton Murphy.
English had been last at the bell, but moved up in the closing straight, clocking 1:45.93.
Mo Farah won a tremendous men’s 10000m final to retain his title from London 2012.
Instead of the sedate pace that has become the norm in recent Championship runnings of this event, the Briton’s main challengers tried to force the initiative early on – with Kenyan Paul Tanui and Ethiopians Yigrem Demelash and Tamirat Tora turning up the heat, with Farah having his American training partner Galen Rupp for company.
Farah found himself falling with five laps to go, being tripped up by Rupp of all people.
