A GROUP of friends had a very lucky escape at the weekend when their car burst into flames while they were travelling on the ‘new line road’ around six miles from Wellingtonbridge in the direction of Arthurstown.
The incident occurred at around 12 p.m. on Sunday as the friends, who are believed to be from the south Wexford area, were making their way towards Duncannon and the Hook for a fishing trip.
Passers-by were shocked when they came across the car, completely engulfed in flames, blocking the road.
One person who passed the scene commented to the Echo: “It was completely ablaze and was blocking the road. There were a lot of flames emanating from it and large plumes of smoke; the whole road was covered in smoke at one point.”
Plain clothes Gardai from Wexford attended the scene along with members of New Ross Fire Service who brought the blaze under control.
Thankfully, no-one was injured in the incident but the vehicle was completely destroyed. The exact cause of the blaze was unknown as the Echo went to press.
