Students are being warned to always look for standards when buying electrical goods – particularly the CE Mark symbol.
The National Standards Authority of Ireland is launching its Standards Smart campaign, as over 56,000 students are set to receive their Leaving Cert results tomorrow.
By law, all electrical goods sold in Europe must display the CE Mark – which means the product has been tested and meets safety standards.
NSAI spokesperson Pat Bracken has said that electrical products that do not comply with standards can be extremely dangerous.
“If you’re buying an electrical product, I think the first thing you should do is look for the CE Mark,” he said.
“The CE Mark will be on the product or on the packaging.
“You should also look for the manufacturer’s address and contact details, which should also be provided on the packaging, and they give you the assurance and the contact points if you need to verify whether the product meets the requirements.”
