Tori Peña has missed out on her bid to qualify for a Championship pole vault final for the first time, writes Will Downing in Rio.
The Finn Valley vaulter got through two heights, first time at 4.15m and her second attempt at 4.30m, and looked like she might be able to make something happen at these Games, her tenth major Championships, having missed out on the final at the previous Olympics in London, and in June this year at the European Championships in Amsterdam.
However, Peña couldn’t get over 4.45m, and fell short of the automatic qualifying mark of 4.60m – which is also her lifetime best.

Peña’s season’s best is 4.52m.
Later tonight, Thomas Barr competes in the men’s 400m hurdles semi-final, having come within a quarter-of-a-second from his Irish record in yesterday’s heats.
