The Olympic Council of Ireland will meet later today to discuss the fallout from the Rio ticketing scandal.

Pat Hickey – who has stepped down as OCI President – remains in a Brazilian jail.

It’s been a turbulent week for the Olympic Council of Ireland after Mr Hickey, 71, who has denied wrongdoing, was detained at a hotel in the Barra da Tijuca area of the city before being formally accused under Brazilian law of ticket touting, running a cartel and illicit marketing.

The OCI and two ticket agencies at the centre of the controversy pledged their co-operation and urged an anticipated independent inquiry in Dublin to make its findings as quickly as possible.

The arrest – along with that of another Irishman, Kevin Mallon – prompted the Government to set up a non-statutory inquiry to investigate allegations of ticket touting.

A retired judge is expected to be appointed this week to oversee that investigation – which Sports Minister Shane Ross says could take about 12 weeks to complete.

The Tanaiste and Justice Minister, Frances Fitzgerald, said that she hopes the inquiry will uncover all the facts behind the case.

The OCI has said it will also appoint an external independent firm to carry out a review into the matter.
