Young people from a Palestinian refugee camp have made a video to thank fans of Celtic football club who have raised more than €150,000 for Palestinian charities.
The Scottish side are facing sanctions from UEFA for the waving of Palestine flags at a fixture against Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva and are expecting a fine in the region of £17,500.
The Green Brigade group of supporters launched an appeal to match that figure in donations.
The donations will go to the Lajee Center, a cultural and sports project for children in Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem and Medical Aid Palestine, which delivers health and medical care to those “worst affected by conflict, occupation and displacement”.
The campaign has raised far in excess of their original target and young people at the Lajee Center have expressed their thanks.
“Thank you for your solidarity,” one said and another added, “We love you Celtic.”
“To all the Celtic fans and the Green Brigade, much love from Palestine.”
The message on their Facebook page translates as: “Thank you Green Brigade and Celtic fans in friendship and solidarity. We thank the Celtics on continuing their solidarity to the Palestinian issue.”
