Gardaí have warned motorists that bus lanes “will operate as normal during operating times” despite the upcoming strike by Dublin Bus workers.

“Although Dublin Bus services will not be operating during this time, bus lanes will continue to be used by other public service vehicles, emergency service vehicles and cyclists,” the statement said.

Dublin Bus services will cease operating at 9pm tonight for a 48-hour period.

“An Garda Síochána recognise that the public will face difficulties therefore commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and identify alternatives forms of (public) transport on the day,” the Garda statement continues.

“Traffic is expected to be extremely heavy on commuter routes, especially during morning and evening peaks.

“There will be an increase in the number of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians on the roads.

“An Garda Síochána appeal to all road users to take extra care on their journey.”

Transport Minister Shane Ross is appealing for both sides to return to talks, but the National Bus and Railworkers Union has said that without an injection of Government cash, Dublin Bus won’t be able to pay them more than the 8.25% offered.

Drivers are seeking in the region of 15%, and some unions want parity with LUAS drivers.
