Young king Stormzy won the innovator award at the Association of Independent Music (AIM) Awards, an accolade richly deserved for his achievements over the past two years.

Meanwhile, Little Simz was recognised as having the best independent album of the year for her debut A Curious Tale Of Trials + Persons. Released via her own label Age 101 it’s a genre-defying, contemplative, thought-provoking, titan of an album and beat the likes of Skepta’s Konnichiwa, Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool and Roots Manuva’s Bleeds.

Ghetts x Rude Kid, and Skepta, were unfortunate to miss out on track of the year – but it was always going to be a difficult task taking on Adele’s Hello.

Stormzy’s award recognises his achievements in becoming a household name across the UK while staying authentic to the genre, something highlighted by the fact he has a gold plaque sitting proudly at home for a freestyle recorded in a park.

And we’re still expecting an album from him this year.
