The Republic of Ireland U17s continued their preparations for the UEFA U17 Championships Qualifying Round with a 3-2 victory over Turkey yesterday, helped in no small part by this beauty of a goal from Lee O’Connor.

The 16-year-old from Waterford signed a three-year contract with Manchester United this summer and it is easy to see what impressed the Premier League outfit.

Ireland took a fortunate lead in the 14th minute when the visitors scored an own goal after defender Okan Turp’s back-pass ended up in his own net but Turkey levelled in the 32nd minute.

Seven minutes into the second half Ireland regained the lead but the Turks won a penalty in the 54th minute to level things up once more.

But Ireland’s victory was sealed in the 66th minute thanks to this fantastic individual goal from O’Connor.

The defender took possession in his own half then burst forward to outstrip the Turkish midfield and slot the ball into the bottom corner as the keeper advanced.

Definitely one to watch for the future.
