The Government is being urged today to pass a Bill calling for a referendum on repealing the 8th Amendment, rather than holding a citizens assembly.
The pro-choice group Rosa is holding a Day of Action in Dublin today to garner support for the Bill put forward by AAA/PBP TD Ruth Coppinger.
Events are taking place throughout the day, including mural and placard making, campaign stalls, and street theatre.
A rally will then be held in Henry Street which will feature speakers such as Ruth Coppinger and Anna Cosgrave, the founder of the Repeal jumper project.
Rita Harrold of Rosa says TDs need to deal with this issue in the Dáil.
“We’re calling on the Government to support that Bill, for that Bill to be passed by TDs in the Dáil in early October, as opposed to the idea of putting this crucial issue that women need dealt with, that women need changed, to a so-called citizen’s assembly, which is an obviously unrepresentative group of 100 random people as opposed to elected officials [or] a referendum, which is obviously crucially needed,” she said.
