Former Roscommon footballer Nigel Dineen has confirmed his intentions to contest for the role of Roscommon senior football manager.

His nomination would compromise Kevin McStay’s chances of retaining the position should he decide to run again after joint manager Fergal O’Donnell resigned this week.

Dineen told Shannonside Sport that he has received backing from clubs and players within the county.

“I’m a very passionate Roscommon ex-footballer and manager, and I would be looking for the best interests of Roscommon,” said Dineen.

“I believe, since I put my name forward, I’ve got serious support from ex-county footballers, from current players and from the clubs.

“But the thing that’s very important is that whoever is the manager, they get the full support and backing.

“You can’t have people in different corners shouting. I think you need everyone coming together because that’s the only way you’re going to conquer, if everyone and the whole county come behind the new manager.”
