A 38-year-old man has been arrested following a robbery at a bookmakers shop in Co Westmeath.

The man, who was armed with a knife, entered the premises in Baylough, Athlone at 3.40pm yesterday.

He threatened staff, took an amount of cash and fled the scene in a car.

No one was injured during the incident.

During a follow-up operation, a man was arrested and a car and quantity of cash was also recovered.

The man is currently being held at Athlone garda station and investigations are on going.
