A young man in his 30s was killed in a tragic farm accident near Dungannon in Co Tyrone on Sunday.

He has been named locally as James Irwin, who was in his 30s and was due to get married soon.

It is understood Mr Irwin lost his life in the accident around 2pm, which is said to have involved a combine harvester on the Rhone Road between Dungannon and Moy.

According to local MP Tom Elliott the young man was getting ready for his wedding.

The Fermanagh and south Tyrone MP said: “Whilst the full details are not yet known, I understand that the young man was in his thirties and was planning to get married sometime in the near future.

“This tragedy illustrates that the agricultural industry carries a more significant risk than any other industry and behind these statistics is a story of a grieving family, a community in shock and the need to make farms safer places to work and live in.

“I extend my sympathies to the grieving family at this dreadfully sad time,” he added.

Police confirmed they received a report of the "sudden death" of the man at Rhone Road at about 2pm on Sunday.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation into the man’s death.

DUP councillor Frances Burton said local people are devastated by the accident.

“My heartfelt sympathy goes to the entire family,” she said.

“This is such a terrible tragedy for any family to come to terms with.

“This young man’s family is very much in my prayers today.”
