A man in his early 60s has been stabbed in the face during an aggravated burglary in Blarney, Co Cork.
A man entered a house at Pauds Cross in Blarney at around 9.05pm last night and was confronted by the owner who had returned home with his wife.
After a struggle, the homeowner managed to force the intruder out of the house. The perpetrator produced a knife, however, and proceeded to stab the homeowner in the face before leaving the scene.
The injured party’s wife raised the alarm by alerting Gardaí, who along with medical personnel, were on the scene within minutes and brought the injured man to Cork University Hospital where he has since been released.
A short time later, at around 10pm, Gardaí arrested a man in his early 30s and a woman in her mid 20s in the nearby Tower area.
The pair were arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows gardaí to detain suspects for up to 24 hours before they must be either released or charged.
While the man is currently being held at Gurranabraher Garda Station, the woman is being questioned at the Mayfield Garda Station.
