Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone walked the red carpet as they brought their new musical La La Land to the Toronto International Film Festival.

Critics have hailed the movie which is already generating Oscar buzz since it was first shown in Italy last month.

Emma, 27, is an early favourite an Academy Award after winning the Volpi Cup for best actress at the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

In La La Land, Ryan plays jazz pianist Sebastian, the love interest of aspiring actress Mia, played by Emma, whose relationship is tested as their careers evolve.

At the Toronto premiere, Emma, dressed in a yellow shift dress covered in a daisy applique, was all smiles as she posed with Ryan, 35, wearing a navy patterned suit.

In an interview with Variety, Ryan said his on-screen chemistry with Emma came from improvising in their previous films together.

La La Land is the pair’s third film outing, after the 2013 movie Gangster Squad and 2011′s Crazy, Stupid, Love.

“We’ve been asked to improvise a lot in our films,” Ryan said. “I think even in our first audition for Crazy, Stupid Love we were asked to improvise.

“I just think improvisation creates a different dynamic in a scene than when you’re just reading dialogue. We improvised in this film as well. It just creates a different kind of connection.

“Obviously it’s great to work with people you know. You listen to the way they deliver a line more intently, or you watch the way they play a scene more closely, because you know them. You’re more invested. You can create a relationship, that’s your job generally, but it’s certainly nice when you have one.”

La La Land is due to be released in UK cinemas in January.
