Rita Ora has spoken out against the speculation that she could have been the ‘Becky with the good hair’ that Beyonce sang about in her song Sorry earlier this year.
The singer was caught in the middle of the furore surrounding the track, with many suggesting she could be the girl who had an alleged affair with Beyonce’s husband Jay Z.
Around the time of the chatter among music and celebrity fans, Rita was also spotted stepping out wearing a badge that said “Not Becky” after the Met Ball gala party.
Speaking to Vanity Fair magazine, Rita said of the whole saga: “That [pin] was a present from Katy Perry. Maybe I was the only one seen wearing it, but there were others.
“As for the rest of it, I’m oblivious, I’m just not the gossip queen. I find it incredibly rude and disrespectful to women in general [when] we get accused of something that’s basically against the important part — the music.”
Rita was also linked to the rumoured affair thanks to her past with Jay Z: she was previously signed to his record label Roc Nation.
And there was a picture she showed off on social media of herself wearing a lemon-cupped bra, which some members of Beyonce’s fanbase assumed was a dig at Beyonce, whose album was called Lemonade.
Rita added, in her interview with the magazine: “First and foremost, Jay Z is my inspiration and one of my idols —lyrically, musically, business-wise. I still look up to him and his wife every day.”
She added that “Beyonce was one of my biggest idols growing up”.
The jury is still out on whether Beyonce’s song was based on truth or if it was just a lyric, and the identity of “Becky” has never been revealed.
