Fine Gael TD is calling for the Government to intervene following planned cuts to services by Sligo County Council.

Local TD Tony McLoughlin is calling on his party colleague Minister Simon Coveney, and his department, to work to help solve staffing and financial issues in the council.

Yesterday, hundreds took part in a protest over the proposed closure of the county’s central library in Sligo town.

Deputy Mc Loughlin said that the library is an important amenity in the local area.

A petition to save the library has so far gathered more than 2,600 signatures.

“People are very, very disappointed and very, very annoyed,” he said.

“This came as a kind of bombshell during the week when it was announced by the chief executive officer that the Central Library in Sligo Town was to be closed as and from next Tuesday.

“There was a protest organised by Impact, there was a huge turnout there.”
