The Government has announced a review of operations at the Oberstown youth detention centre.

It follows a series of work stoppages by staff and several incidents including a rooftop protest by detainees.

Minister for Children Katherine Zappone said the review aims to address any obstacles to reform of the facility.

She said: “A number of serious incidents and industrial action by staff at the campus have highlighted the need to reflect on the progress achieved, and to identify and address any obstacles to the necessary future reforms.”

The review will be conducted by two of Europe’s leading youth detention experts.

Minister Zappone will receive a report at the end of the review process.
