Up to three children, including a toddler, are being airlifted to hospital after suffering burn injuries in a house in West Cork, writes Eoin English.
Valentia Coast Guard launched and is coordinating a major emergency response operation after the alarm was raised following the incident just outside Drinagh earlier.
Members of the West Cork Rapid Response team, paramedics from the National Ambulance Service, gardaí and fire crews from Clonakilty and Dunmanway, all responded to the incident.
The childrens’ injuries were so severe it was decided to task the Shannon-based Rescue helicopter, R115.
The situation was deemed so critical that the emergency services opted to land the helicopter in a field close to the house, rather than on a nearby GAA field, which has been designated an emergency landing zone.
It is now on route to either Cork Airport, or to a landing zone at Bishopstown GAA club, close to Cork University Hospital.
Update 10.50pm: Five-month-old twins and their toddler brother are being treated at Cork University Hospital after a house fire in West Cork.
It’s understood they suffered burn injuries after a petrol canister exploded at their home at Drinagh.
