There is widespread devastation at the news that Mary Berry will be leaving The Great British Bake Off when the programme moves from the BBC to Channel 4.

The queen of baking is following in the footsteps of presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, and has said she is standing down due to loyalty to the BBC.

In her statement, she admitted she felt “sad for the audience”, as they “may not be ready for change”.

She added: “I hope they understand my decision.”

The 81-year-old TV star was right, as within seconds of the news breaking, Twitter was awash with remorseful messages shared from her fans.

Former contestants from Bake Off pitched in, including outspoken stars Richard Burr and Martha Collison.

But, most of all, it was just utter sadness. Soggy bottomed, ridiculous sadness.

Mary, we’ll miss you.

So … Paul Hollywood, what are you saying?
