Paul Hollywood is well-known for his crushing comments when judging efforts on The Great British Bake Off.

While a “Hollywood handshake” is the highest praise, a damning comment is far easier to come by.

One of his most memorable moments came when contestant John Whaite felt the full force of his disapproval in the third series.

After John mixed up sugar and salt while making rum babas, Hollywood spat out the cake and warned fellow judge Mary Berry not to even try it.

Contestant Mark Onley also got a rough ride in the fourth series when Hollywood memorably told him: “The custard is very slack.”

Equally crushing was his verdict on series five favourite Richard Burr, who failed to deliver on two of the final baking challenges after winning star baker five times during the series.

Hollywood twisted the knife when he said: “How the mighty have fallen.”

But his hard-won praise delights fans. In Wednesday’s episode he was enamoured by Mary’s Bakewell tart, dubbing her “Bezza”, prompting great mirth on Twitter.

Earlier on in the series he was won over by Tom Gilliford’s spiced chai frappe latteccino biscuits, which earned a Hollywood handshake.

He also prompted a great jaffa cake debate when he dunked his treat in tea, triggering a scolding from Berry.

In 2015, the bread supremo was awed by the King of the Jungle bake whipped up by his lookalike Paul Jagger.

The lion bread even featured edible claws and Hollywood was so impressed he said it was one of the best things he had ever seen made out of bread, and he would not have dared to take on such a challenge.

Fans will be hoping he cooks up more enjoyable moments when he moves with the show to Channel 4.
