The theme of this year’s march is rise and repeal, with protesters calling for a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment, the article in the Constitution which gives equal right to life to a fetus as to a pregnant woman.

A citizens’ assembly will hold its first meeting – to consider the question of abortion – on Saturday October 15.

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone, who is taking part in today’s March for Choice, thinks the Government is strong enough to deal with the issue of abortion.

She said: “I do believe that they are watching what is going on today and as the whole process unfolds, that is why it is really important for the strength of the people to rise today.

“Because I do think the Cabinet will listen to that.”
