The Cork ladies footballers have enjoyed a hero’s welcome at their sixth consecutive All-Ireland homecoming, writes Stephen Barry.

The Rebelettes beat Dublin by one point yesterday, in a game which has attracted controversy over a point wrongly denied to Dublin in the first-half.

At the South Mall reception for their 11th All-Ireland in 12 seasons, the team were greeted by a crowd of supporters in wet weather, something their captain Ciara O’Sullivan was grateful for.

“We’re delighted with the turnout, particularly on a wet evening like this,” said the Mourneabbey star.

“It makes all the difference to have the supporters come out and it made a massive difference in Croke Park yesterday. We really do appreciate it.”

Rena Buckley, now the winner of 17 All-Ireland medals between the big ball and camogie, hopes that the future is secure with the kids coming out to greet the team.

“It’s fantastic to have such support and the kids here,” said the player of the match. “It shows that things will go well in the future for Cork, hopefully.

“We’re delighted to be here in Cork with the cup and delighted with the support. It’s a great evening.”

The team also brought the Brendan Martin Cup to Crumlin and Temple Street Children’s Hospitals before leaving Dublin.

“We’re in a very fortunate position to be able to play sport and it’s nice to go and visit the people who maybe aren’t so fortunate,” said O’Sullivan.

“They were delighted to see it the cup and I think even a few Dublin supporters enjoyed seeing it as well!”
