A ghostly new trailer has been released for Emmerdale, revealing that one of its well-known characters is about to make an exit from the soap.

The ITV series looks set to be gearing up for another dramatic autumn, with the promo that debuted today suggesting viewers may be about to witness a death in the village.

Moving to the sound of What A Difference A Day Makes, characters from the teatime drama twirl each other around a misty, atmospheric dancefloor – with a phantom-like figure emerging from the smoke to dance with them.

Emmerdale villagers who will be involved in what soap bosses are touting as an “unmissable week of groundbreaking episodes” include Rhona, Paddy, Aaron, Robert, Emma, James, Laurel and Marlon.

The trailer opens with a worried-looking Marlon holding a ticking pocket watch and closes on the words “Who will take their last dance?” – it seems time could be running out for one of the villagers.

But if their impressive dance moves are anything to go by, we could well be looking at the stars of Strictly Come Dancing 2017.

Plot twists are being kept tightly under wraps until the episodes air later this month.
